Introductory Mandarin

MODULE 1

Course Summary

This course is designed for complete beginners with little or no knowledge of Mandarin. Students will be taught to master pinyin and Chinese pronunciation system, use simple greetings and basic conversation skills, such as making introductions, talking about family, etc.

Teaching methods

The course is tutorial based with a combination of joint class activities and group work. Supplementary material and homework may be prepared by the teacher.

Learning outcomes

  • By the end of the course students should be able to:
  • Master Chinese pinyin and pronunciation rules fluently.
  • Have a good command of about 150 Chinese characters.
  • Know about basic grammar and sentence structure used in everyday conversations.
  • Have a general understanding of China.

MODULE 2

Course Summary

This course is suitable for students who have successfully completed Introductory Mandarin (Module 1) or for learners who have a basic knowledge of the Chinese language. In this module, learners will be familiarised with the basic principles of the speaking and writing systems of the Chinese language.

The course is tutorial based with a combination of joint class activities and group work. Supplementary material and homework is prepared by the teacher.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Have a good command of another 150 Chinese characters.
  • Be familiar with more basic grammar and sentence structures used in everyday conversations and to express events related to the present and future.
  • Have a further understanding of China and its customs and ways of life
